At Thomas’s Kensington, we are ambitious for every child. Our aim is to provide an education that is both broad and intellectually rigorous: one that develops secure knowledge, deep understanding and a genuine love of learning.
We believe that excellent teaching lies at the heart of this. Lessons are carefully structured, explanations are clear, and pupils are consistently challenged to think. Knowledge is taught explicitly and revisited over time, enabling pupils to make meaningful connections and retain what they learn. Alongside this, we place great importance on how pupils learn: developing curiosity, independence and the ability to reflect on and improve their own work.
A Culture of Scholarship
From the earliest years, we cultivate a culture of enquiry and intellectual curiosity. Pupils are encouraged to ask thoughtful questions, explore ideas in depth and engage fully with their learning. They are supported to take risks, learn from mistakes and develop the confidence to articulate their thinking with clarity.
Strong foundations in reading, writing and mathematics underpin the curriculum. Reading, in particular, sits at the heart of school life, enabling pupils to access knowledge, develop language and think critically. As pupils move through the school, their learning becomes increasingly sophisticated, with greater emphasis on reasoning, analysis and independent thought.
Breadth and Depth
Our curriculum is both broad and ambitious. Alongside core academic subjects, pupils benefit from specialist teaching in areas such as art, computing, dance, drama, languages, music, science and sport. These subjects are seen as integral to a rich education, enabling pupils to develop creativity, cultural understanding and physical confidence.
At the same time, depth is prioritised. Pupils are given time to think, practise and refine their understanding, ensuring that learning is secure and meaningful. This balance of breadth and depth ensures that pupils develop both a wide range of interests and a strong academic foundation.
Early Years and Lower School
In the Early Years, learning is shaped by purposeful play and carefully structured teaching. Pupils develop core skills in communication, literacy and mathematics within an environment that fosters curiosity, creativity and independence.
As pupils move into Years 1 and 2, learning becomes increasingly structured, with high expectations for all. Strong foundations are established, and pupils begin to engage more deeply with their learning, developing confidence and fluency across the curriculum.
Preparing for the Next Stage
As pupils progress through the prep school, they are increasingly challenged to think critically, make connections across subjects and take ownership for their learning. Specialist teaching enriches the curriculum, and pupils benefit from a broad and ambitious programme that prepares them exceptionally well for senior school.
We understand that preparation for senior school is an important part of a Thomas’s Kensington education. Our approach to the 11+ and 13+ assessment process is structured and tailored to the individual, ensuring that every child is both well-prepared and well-supported.
Strong academic foundations are built over time through high-quality teaching, with increasing opportunities for challenge and extension as pupils move through the prep school. From Year 4 onwards, pupils are introduced to reasoning, alongside targeted support and enrichment in English and Mathematics.
Alongside academic preparation, we provide careful guidance for families. Regular information events, individual meetings and clear communication ensure that parents are well informed throughout the process. Pupils are supported with study skills, familiarity with assessment formats and interview preparation, helping them to approach the next stage with confidence.
Pupils go on to a wide range of leading senior schools, many with scholarships and awards. Throughout, our focus remains on ensuring that each child moves on to a school that is right for them.
Technology and Learning
At Thomas’s Kensington, we take a considered and purposeful approach to the use of technology. We recognise that digital tools can enhance learning when used well, but we are equally clear that they should never replace high-quality teaching, discussion, reading and writing.
In the early years, Lower School and Years 3 and 4, technology is used sparingly, with an emphasis on purposeful interaction, language development and secure foundational learning. As pupils move into Years 5 and 6, opportunities to use technology increase, but always with clear educational intent.
Alongside this, pupils follow a rigorous computing curriculum designed to develop strong digital literacy and a secure understanding of computing principles. They learn to use technology thoughtfully and responsibly, while also developing skills in areas such as coding, problem-solving and digital communication.
Our approach prioritises focus, thinking and meaningful engagement. Pupils are taught to use technology responsibly and effectively, developing strong digital literacy alongside the ability to work independently of it. In this way, technology supports learning where it adds value, while ensuring that the fundamentals of a great education remain firmly in place.
